Thursday night was Dylan's first softball game. She has been very excited about trying something new, her raspberry top and tye-dye socks! Justin has been practicing with her in the backyard. Sometimes she cares, sometimes she doesn't - ha! Due to rain, she had only been to one practice before her game. Overall, I'd say her first game was a success. Right before the game it suddenly got cold after a beautiful day. I thought that would be an issue because according to her, she was FREEZING just walking to the car after Chick-Fil-A. She surprised me though and was very tough in the cold and didn't complain once. We told her softball wasn't as much running as soccer which is great news to her. The coach had them warm up by running to the outfield fence and back. Justin and I were laughing because she was the last one. The game started and you could tell she was confused, but she looked so sweet out there. She loved kicking the dirt.
She is technically playing softball, but it's adjusted for little kids. The first three swings are coach pitch and if they don't hit any of those they have three chances off a tee. For their first game the coach made the decision to skip the pitches and just use the tee. The second game will be pitching so we will see how that goes!
Her first at bat, she hit the ball, but didn't run. The other team got her out before her coach could get her attention to run to first base. When she walked off the field she so sweetly and innocently asked me where first base was. It melted me. I guess the game field looked different to her. The second time up, she had it down and made it to first base. Also, this league lets every player bat each inning. After the last girl has batted, they let any runners still on base run out the bases. Dylan was on base when this happened and that really confused her too! Oh, well...nothing a little experience can't fix. Towards the end of the game Dylan played pitcher. After a hit, Dylan scooped up the ball so naturally. I was impressed. The problem was she held onto it instead of throwing it to first. It'll just take time, but she got a hit, fielded the ball and most importantly enjoyed herself. I think she'll have even more fun her next game because she will be more comfortable with how things work.
The Bombers!
