Leap Day turned out to be not a great day for us. The night before Katie and Lauren dropped by so they are our witnesses that Dylan was perfectly normal. After dinner on the 28th, Dylan told us she was having trouble breathing, but said it was a "boogie string". That's Dylan language for congestion. Anyway she started coughing, but nothing that was too alarming. The next day, Leap Day, Justin called to check on her and suggested I make her an appointment to get checked out. Normally I would have waited it out, but since Adam was so little (9 days old) we wanted to make sure she wasn't contagious. I made the appointment and Justin met us there to take Dylan so I wouldn't have to take the other kids into the doctors office. Her appointment was at 1:50. He was sending periodic texts to inform me her oxygen count was low and they were giving her breathing treatments to see if they could get her chest to open up. He said Dylan was doing great and was getting popsicles.
She was still in her pajamas!
I kept myself busy taking pictures of Adam, writing thank you notes, etc and then I realized several hours had passed. Justin sent a text saying they were trying one last breathing treatment & if it didn't work they were transporting her to Cook Children's in downtown Fort Worth. That immediately freaked me out because transport sounds like an ambulance and with me not being the one at the doctor's with her I didn't realize she was so bad! I sent a text back asking if he meant transfer instead of transport - nope he meant transport! He called a little bit later to let me know they were sending her to the hospital, but that it was probably a cautionary thing & that she'd probably get there & be sent home....oh, and that his phone was dying too! I immediately ran his charger up to him and at least got to see my baby for a minute!!
After that I took Adam and Savannah over to Johnny and Kasey's. Katie and Lauren headed there when they could to help out. Justin told me I didn't need to go to the hospital and that I should just stay home and take care of the baby, but there was NO way Dylan was in the hospital without me being there when I could! Before I left Johnny & Kasey's house I had to feed Adam one last time. While doing that Justin sent this picture and my heart dropped.
It is not fun seeing your child being loaded into an ambulance! This was the Teddy Bear team and Dylan loved them and loved going in the ambulance!!
Luckily traffic wasn't bad and I got there not too long after them. Here is a picture I took of Dylan as soon as I arrived.
I was so overwhelmed with emotion getting to see her. I was so happy to see she was still acting like my little girl. Justin filled me in more once I got there. He said he was worried she would be scared so he opted to ride in the front of the ambulance with her instead of driving his truck. Apparently, he didn't need to worry. She talked to the Teddy Bear Team the entire ride and according to Justin told them her whole life story!
We waited in the emergency room forever, but finally it was time for her to get chest x-rays. I got to go with her and it was amazing to see how brave she was with everything she was going through. Her only complaint was that she was SO thirsty. She had a Gatorade at the pediatrician's and threw it up so she hadn't had anything in a while.
When the results came back, we found out she had a mucus plug in one lung that was pretty much blocking off any oxygen to that lung and causing the top portion of her lung to collapse. She would have to stay in the hospital until the plug was gone. Her treatment was to continue breathing treatments, fluids, getting her to cough big and beating on her to loosen the plug. Although they admitted her, they did what they called a 23 hour admittance meaning they expected her to go home the next day. That made us feel better! I stayed a little while longer, then had to go get the other kids, get them to bed and pack an overnight bag for Justin and Dylan. Katie was an angel and helped me to get Justin's truck home from the doctor's office and run the bag up to the hospital.
Justin called the next morning to update me. He said Dylan was being so silly and cute! She was having a blast. She was very proud of herself for setting a record for drinking so many apple juices, seven of them! Justin said she was the furthest thing from shy and was talking like crazy to the nurses. She told one nurse she loved her flower shirt. She was so excited because they gave her 20 stickers (she counted them over & over to be sure), crayons and bubbles (that she got to do inside!). Justin said she was coloring so he asked if he could change the channel from her movie. Her response was, "sure daddy. Watch whatever you want....golf, basketball, whatever!" Nurses had to come in all throughout the night to check on her and at one point Justin heard her singing a Band Perry song with several nurses out in the hallway. Ha! I think she enjoyed all the attention....little ham!
The great news was that she was going to be released about noon. The bad news was I couldn't pick them up because Adam had his newborn screening at Baylor hospital in Grapevine soon after. Katie to the rescue again. Dylan ended up getting out a little early so Katie got to the house with them shortly before I left so I got to see the for a minute. We think it was all the medication, but Dylan was wound!
They grabbed Savannah and the four of them went to lunch. Dylan usually will not talk to waiters/waitresses, but that day she didn't have a problem doing so. She LOVED her queso and said it was the BEST she'd had in her WHOLE life and asked the waiter to bring something she could take it home in. She is such a funny child and it was very comforting to see her feeling so well. We are very thankful we took her in, that she had such great care, that she was so brave, that she got better quickly and that we have such awesome family to help us out when we need it!!
