I realized I never posted about Dylan's 5 year old well child visit. With me being pregnant brained during the holidays, I didn't get it booked until late. She had it in early January. She was so relieved to find out she needed no vaccinations & I figured the appointment was going to be a breeze. Boy was I wrong; it was her toughest one yet!
She is 45" tall (3'9") which is about the 70th percentile and 42 pounds which is the 65th.
Every thing is great with her and she passed all the developmental questions with flying colors. They did a quick eye exam and said she has about 20/30 vision. Her hearing test was great too.
The appointment didn't take a turn for the worse until I asked the doctor to really look into one of her ears. She has always had a thing about ears, but in the weeks leading up to the appointment she had gotten out of bed several times to say she could feel ear wax.
It was the same ear she had issues with last spring. Back then, they said she did have a build up and cleaned it out no problem. I assumed it would be the same thing. I was so surprised because they used the same little tool as last time, but Dylan was hysterical saying it hurt when last time it didn't phase her at all. So, long story short it took several attempts with various tools to get it out. Dylan was crying like crazy in a lot of pain which is NOT like her. I just felt terrible for her and it broke my heart there was nothing I could do for her. I was extra annoyed when I found out what caused all the wax build up. It was her tube she'd had put in when she was 16 months old. The tubes usually stay in about a year and then fall out on their own. Well, when hers fell out it got caught in her ear canal and had been accumulating wax ever sense. So that means the specialist missed it at her follow up appointment, this same office missed it during her issues last spring and it was also missed every single well child visit since she was little! At least it's out now!! There was a sore underneath when they got it out so they gave her ear drops that healed her up in a few days. After we got home from the appointment I asked her how her ear felt and she innocently looked at me and said, "I don't feel anything." That lead me to ask if before she could always feel something in her ear and she said yes! That poor child had been living for years constantly feeling something in her ear!!
Here are her sad little pictures...
She ended up with lots of stickers, little toys and even a popsicle!
She was very adamant about letting it drain.
